Translating Qingming Poetry into English

Ascending the Stork Tower" by Wang Zhihuan

Translation:

In Qingming rains incessant fall,

On paths, travelers' souls enthrall.

Where, I ask, can wine be found,

A shepherd lad points, village with blossoms crowned.

Explanation:

In this poem, Wang Zhihuan describes the rainy Qingming season and the melancholy it brings to travelers. He seeks solace in wine and asks a shepherd boy for directions, who points to a village adorned with apricot blossoms. The translation aims to capture the imagery of rain and the sense of longing, while maintaining the simplicity and elegance of the original.

2.

Qingming" by Du Mu

Translation:

In Qingming rains incessant fall,

On paths, travelers' souls enthrall.

Where, I ask, can wine be found,

A shepherd lad points, village with blossoms crowned.

Explanation:

Du Mu's poem also reflects the rainy atmosphere of Qingming, with travelers feeling disheartened by the weather. Seeking refuge, the speaker asks for a tavern, guided by a shepherd boy to a village adorned with apricot blossoms. The translation seeks to maintain the rhythm and simplicity of the original, while conveying the themes of longing and transient beauty.

In translating Qingming poetry into English, it's important to preserve the cultural and emotional nuances of the original works. Through careful selection of words and attention to rhythm and imagery, these translations aim to capture the essence of Qingming poetry for Englishspeaking readers.
